Brow Lift vs. Eyelid Surgery: Which One Is Right for You?

Aging around the eyes can make you look tired, stressed, or older than you feel. Sagging skin, deep forehead lines, and drooping eyelids often appear together, but the best solution depends on where the signs of aging are most noticeable. Two of the most effective surgical options are a brow lift and eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). While they may seem similar, they address different concerns and can be performed alone or together for a more comprehensive rejuvenation.

Common Signs of Aging Around the Eyes

The delicate skin around the eyes is often one of the first places to show signs of aging. Some of the most common changes include:

  • Horizontal forehead lines that deepen over time
  • Drooping or heavy eyebrows that create a tired or stern look
  • Upper eyelids that sag, sometimes interfering with vision
  • Puffy or baggy lower eyelids that add to a fatigued appearance
  • Fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes

These changes are usually caused by a combination of skin laxity, weakening muscles, and a gradual descent of facial tissues. Genetics, sun exposure, and lifestyle factors can make these concerns appear earlier or become more noticeable with age.

Brow Lift vs. Eyelid Surgery: Which One Is Right for You?

While both a brow lift and eyelid surgery can improve the upper face, they target different problems.

A brow lift focuses on lifting the eyebrows and smoothing forehead lines. This procedure repositions the brow to a more youthful, natural height and can open up the upper eye area by removing heaviness caused by drooping brows.

It is especially helpful for people whose primary concern is a low brow position, deep horizontal forehead lines, or frown lines between the brows.

Your surgeon can perform several types of brow lifts, including a temple lift and an endoscopic brow lift. Endoscopic brow lifts are often preferred because they use very small incisions and result in minimal scars.

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, removes excess skin and sometimes fat from the upper or lower eyelids.

Upper eyelid surgery corrects sagging skin that may hang over the lashes or create a hooded appearance. Lower eyelid surgery targets puffiness, bags, or loose skin below the eyes, making you look more rested.

Choosing between a brow lift and eyelid surgery depends on your unique anatomy and where you see the most noticeable aging.

Some people have low brows without much excess eyelid skin and benefit most from a brow lift. Others have significant upper eyelid drooping but brows that remain in a good position, making eyelid surgery the better choice.

How Long is Recovery After a Brow Lift or Eyelid Surgery?

Recovery after either procedure is generally straightforward, but the timeline can vary.

After a brow lift, most people experience mild swelling and bruising in the forehead and around the eyes for the first week or two. Keeping your head elevated and following your surgeon’s instructions can help reduce swelling.

Many people feel comfortable returning to work and social activities after about two weeks, although strenuous exercise should be postponed for several weeks.

Eyelid surgery typically has a slightly shorter recovery period. Swelling and bruising usually peak within the first few days and then gradually improve. Most people can return to normal activities within seven to ten days, depending on individual healing.

Both procedures involve minimal visible scarring. Incisions for brow lifts are often hidden along the hairline or within natural forehead creases, while eyelid surgery scars are placed in the upper eyelid crease or along the lash line for lower lids.

Can I Have Brow Lift and Eyelid Surgery Together?

Yes, many people choose to combine a brow lift with eyelid surgery for a more complete rejuvenation of the upper face. Combining procedures addresses both a low brow and excess eyelid skin, creating a refreshed appearance that still looks natural.

Performing both surgeries together can also have practical benefits. You only need to plan for one recovery period rather than separate ones, and the combined approach often creates a more balanced and harmonious result.

During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss whether combining these procedures is appropriate for you based on your facial anatomy, aesthetic goals, and overall health.

How Long Does a Brow Lift or Eyelid Surgery Last?

One of the main advantages of surgical treatments over non-surgical options is the longevity of results.

A brow lift can keep the brows elevated and the forehead smoother for many years, often lasting ten years or more. While the natural aging process will continue, your brows will typically remain higher than if you had never had the procedure.

Eyelid surgery results can also be long-lasting. Upper eyelid surgery often lasts up to ten years, while improvements from lower eyelid surgery may last even longer. Some people never need a repeat procedure, especially if they maintain healthy habits and protect their skin from sun damage.
