Can an Eyelid Lift Improve Vision?

Blepharoplasty surgery, commonly known as an eyelid lift, is primarily done for cosmetic reasons. However, many patients who struggle with age-related eye problems are turning to eyelid surgery for medical purposes as well. If you’ve noticed that your eyelids have become heavy or saggy to the point of impeding your field of vision, a blepharoplasty may be able to help.

At Specialty Aesthetic Surgery, our highly-skilled surgeons can give you the look you want while improving your line of sight. Dr. Moskowitz specializes in Asian blepharoplasty surgeries and has performed thousands of successful procedures for people with various ethnic differences in the eyelid.

Eyelid lifts can be done on the upper or lower eye to improve obstructed vision. While many patients opt to combine the two procedures, some can achieve an optimal outcome solely with an upper lift.

Your eyelid lift surgery is done as an outpatient procedure under IV sedation and local anesthetic. You can expect to be in surgery from 1 to 3 hours. During this time, your surgeon will meticulously work to remove excess skin that may be causing vision blockage. Non-functioning or under-performing muscles can also be tightened to give you better vision.

Immediately after your blepharoplasty, you’ll begin to see a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. Wrinkles will be removed making you look well-rested and happy. Post-surgical swelling can continue to limit eyesight for several days to several weeks.

Patients are encouraged to take at least several days off work to prevent excessive eye strain and limit potential complications. As swelling and bruising subside, gradual improvement to your field of vision will continue to occur.

In most cases, patients achieve lifelong results from just one eyelid surgery. Men and women who are non-smokers and have no pre-existing eye conditions typically have the best outcome from their procedure. Eyelid surgery may be right for you if you have loose or folding skin over your eyelid that hinders eyesight.

At your in-person consultation, your board-certified surgeon will perform an eyelid evaluation and talk to you about your end-goals. Your best options are then reviewed before creating a customized treatment plan tailored to your needs.
