Can Rhinoplasty Fix a Deviated Septum and Improve Breathing?

Nasal breathing issues can significantly impact your quality of life, leading to symptoms like nasal congestion, mouth breathing, snoring, and poor sleep. A deviated septum—a condition where the cartilage and bone that divide the nasal passages are off-center—is one of the most common causes of breathing difficulties. While rhinoplasty is often associated with cosmetic enhancements, it can also be a powerful solution for improving nasal function.

At Specialty Aesthetic Surgery, our expertise includes both functional and cosmetic rhinoplasty, and for many individuals, a single procedure can address structural issues while enhancing the appearance of the nose.

What is Rhinoplasty or Nose Surgery?

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as nose surgery or a “nose job,” is a procedure that reshapes or reconstructs the nose. It can be performed for cosmetic reasons, such as refining the nose’s shape or size, or for functional reasons, including correcting structural abnormalities that impair breathing.

Functional rhinoplasty often overlaps with a septoplasty, which is the procedure specifically intended to correct a deviated septum. When both cosmetic and functional concerns are addressed in one surgery, it’s often referred to as a septorhinoplasty.

Unlike purely cosmetic procedures, functional rhinoplasty is typically performed to restore or improve airflow through the nasal passages. This type of surgery is highly individualized and often recommended when non-surgical treatments (like nasal sprays or breathing strips) fail to provide relief.

Can Rhinoplasty Fix a Deviated Septum and Improve Breathing?

Yes, rhinoplasty can correct a deviated septum and significantly improve breathing through the nose. The septum is the cartilage and bone structure that separates the left and right nostrils. When it’s deviated—either from injury or development—it can obstruct one or both nasal passages. This can make it harder to breathe through the nose, especially during exercise or sleep.

During a functional rhinoplasty, your surgeon can straighten the septum and reposition it centrally. This helps open up the nasal airways, allowing for smoother airflow and more efficient breathing. In addition to addressing the septum, your surgeon may also make adjustments to other internal structures—like the turbinates or nasal valves—that could be contributing to obstruction.

Functional rhinoplasty offers long-term relief for patients who experience nasal blockage, sinus pressure, chronic nasal congestion, or sleep issues due to structural problems in the nose.

How is Septorhinoplasty Performed?

Here’s a general overview of how the surgery works:

Incision and Access: The surgeon makes small incisions inside the nose or across the columella (the strip of tissue between the nostrils) to access the nasal structures.

Septum Correction (Septoplasty): The surgeon reshapes or removes parts of the septal cartilage and bone to straighten it and ensure it is properly aligned. If there’s a perforation, it may also be repaired.

Nasal Valve or Turbinate Adjustments: If needed, additional corrections may be made to the internal nasal valves or turbinates to further improve airflow.

Support and Reinforcement: Cartilage grafts may be used to support weakened areas and prevent collapse during breathing.

Cosmetic Enhancements (Optional): If desired, cosmetic changes like reducing a hump or refining the nasal tip can be made during the same procedure.

Because the nose is a central structure for both function and aesthetics, having surgery performed by a highly experienced facial plastic surgeon ensures a balanced outcome that supports both airflow and facial harmony.

What is Recovery Like After Rhinoplasty?

Recovery from rhinoplasty varies based on the extent of the procedure but typically involves mild to moderate swelling, bruising, and nasal congestion in the first week. Most patients return to non-strenuous activities within 7–10 days.

Here’s what you can expect during recovery:

First Week: You’ll likely wear a nasal splint for the first week. Bruising under the eyes and swelling around the nose is common. Nasal congestion may persist during this time as internal swelling decreases.

Weeks 2–4: Bruising subsides, and you’ll begin to breathe more comfortably. It’s important to avoid strenuous exercise and nose-blowing during this time.

1–3 Months: Most of the swelling resolves, and breathing continues to improve.

6–12 Months: The final shape of the nose becomes apparent as residual swelling completely resolves.

Your surgeon will provide personalized aftercare instructions, including how to keep the nasal passages moist, what medications to avoid, and when you can resume physical activity.

Will My Nasal Breathing Problems Come Back After SeptoRhinoplasty?

When performed by an experienced surgeon, septorhinoplasty for a deviated septum typically provides long-lasting relief. However, there are rare cases where nasal breathing issues can return. This can happen due to:

  • Incomplete correction of the septum
  • Collapse of the nasal valve over time
  • Scar tissue formation
  • Nasal trauma after surgery

To minimize these risks, your surgeon will use advanced techniques to stabilize nasal structures and prevent post-operative collapse. It’s also essential to follow your post-operative instructions closely and avoid any injuries during recovery.

If breathing issues return months or years later, revision surgery may be an option. However, most patients enjoy significant and lasting improvement in nasal airflow after functional rhinoplasty.

Am I a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

You may be a good candidate for functional rhinoplasty if you:

  • Have chronic nasal congestion or obstruction not relieved by medications
  • Experience difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils
  • Have been diagnosed with a deviated septum or nasal valve collapse
  • Suffer from snoring, mouth breathing, or sleep disturbances
  • Are in good overall health and do not smoke
  • Have realistic expectations about the outcomes

A consultation with a facial plastic surgeon at Specialty Aesthetic Surgery will include a full nasal examination, medical history review, and detailed discussion about your goals. Imaging and nasal endoscopy may also be used to evaluate internal structures and plan your surgery.
