Facelift vs. Neck Lift: Which One Do You Need?

When facial aging becomes more noticeable, it can be difficult to pinpoint which procedure will best restore a youthful appearance. At Specialty Aesthetic Surgery, our surgeons specialize in facial and body procedures, customizing each surgery to match the individual needs of our patients.

Two of the most common facial rejuvenation procedures—facelifts and neck lifts—can address different concerns or be performed together for comprehensive results.

How Do You Know When It’s Time for a Facelift or Neck Lift?

Signs of aging develop gradually, and many people notice them first in the lower face and neck. If you’re considering cosmetic surgery, you may already be seeing one or more of the following:

  • Deep lines around the mouth or nose (nasolabial folds)
  • Sagging skin around the cheeks and jawline
  • Loose or hanging skin under the chin (a “turkey neck”)
  • Visible neck bands or creases
  • Loss of facial volume and definition

While non-surgical treatments like fillers or skin-tightening devices can offer temporary improvements, they may no longer provide the results you want. If you’re finding that these treatments don’t quite do enough—or you want more long-lasting results—it may be time to consider a surgical approach.

Facelift vs. Neck Lift: Which One Do You Need?

A facelift and a neck lift often go hand-in-hand, but they target different areas and concerns.

Facelift (Rhytidectomy):

A facelift focuses on the mid to lower face. It lifts sagging cheeks, smooths deep folds, and tightens jowls. Modern facelift techniques at Specialty Aesthetic Surgery often involve repositioning underlying facial tissues for natural-looking results rather than just pulling the skin tight.

Facelifts are ideal for people who are bothered by:

  • Deep smile lines
  • Sagging cheeks
  • Loss of jawline definition
  • Jowls or excess skin along the lower face

Neck Lift (Platysmaplasty or Lower Rhytidectomy):

A neck lift addresses aging in the neck and under the chin. It tightens loose neck skin, removes fat under the chin, and smooths vertical neck bands caused by a weakening of the platysma muscle.

Neck lifts are well-suited for individuals with:

  • A double chin or excess fat in the neck
  • Loose, hanging skin on the neck
  • Pronounced neck bands or wrinkles

In many cases, a combination of both procedures produces the most balanced and rejuvenated appearance. Your surgeon will evaluate your anatomy and aging patterns to determine whether one or both procedures will best achieve your goals.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Facelift or Neck Lift?

Ideal candidates for a facelift or neck lift are healthy individuals who want to improve signs of aging in the face or neck and have realistic expectations. You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Are bothered by visible signs of aging that can’t be corrected with non-surgical treatments
  • Are in good overall health with no medical conditions that impair healing
  • Do not smoke or are willing to stop before and after surgery
  • Have maintained a stable weight

At Specialty Aesthetic Surgery, our surgeons conduct a comprehensive consultation to assess your facial structure, skin quality, and aesthetic concerns. From there, we create a customized surgical plan that aligns with your facial anatomy and personal goals.

What Is Recovery Like After a Facelift or Neck Lift?

Recovery from a facelift or neck lift will vary depending on the extent of the procedure and whether both surgeries are performed together. In general:

  • You can expect swelling, bruising, and a feeling of tightness in the treated areas for the first few days.
  • Most patients take 1 to 2 weeks off work or social activities to allow for healing.
  • Sleeping with your head elevated can help reduce swelling and promote a faster recovery.
  • Sutures are usually removed within a week.
  • Strenuous exercise should be avoided for several weeks, but light activity can typically be resumed after a few days.

Our surgeons and care team at Specialty Aesthetic Surgery will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions, schedule follow-up appointments, and be available to address any concerns during your recovery.

While the early results of your procedure will begin to show as swelling subsides, the final outcome often becomes visible within a few months.

How Long Will My Facelift or Neck Lift Results Last?

Facelift and neck lift results are long-lasting, but they don’t stop the natural aging process. However, these procedures can reset the clock by 10 to 15 years, and you’ll continue to look more youthful than if you hadn’t had surgery.

Several factors affect how long your results last:

  • Your age and skin quality at the time of surgery
  • Your lifestyle (sun exposure, smoking, diet)
  • Genetics
  • Skincare and ongoing maintenance treatments

You can prolong your surgical results by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, practicing daily sun protection, and following a medical-grade skincare routine. Many patients also choose to maintain their youthful appearance with occasional non-surgical treatments like laser resurfacing, microneedling, or neuromodulators.

At Specialty Aesthetic Surgery, our team of experienced facial and body specialists is committed to delivering natural-looking results through advanced techniques and personalized care. Whether you need a facelift, neck lift, or both, we’ll help you regain a refreshed and confident appearance that reflects how you feel inside.
