How Does a Fat Transfer Work?

Also called facial fat grafting, a fat transfer takes fat from elsewhere in your body and prepares it before using it to add volume and restore youthful contours. If you want to avoid regular dermal filler injections, fat transfer offers a long-lasting alternative.

What is a Fat Transfer?

As we age, our facial features lose volume. This leads to the appearance of loose skin and features that look tired and hollow. A fat transfer can restore this lost volume and be used almost anywhere dermal fillers can. This enhancement can last for many years, unlike dermal fillers that need new injections every six months to a year.

How Does a Fat Transfer Work?

During the first step of a fat transfer, fat is removed from an area like the abdomen or thigh. We clean this fat so that we keep only the healthy, living cells, then inject them into the areas of your face where you want added volume.

People also call this procedure facial fat grafting, which means that at least some fat cells will establish a blood supply and become permanent residents of the location. Once these cells have grafted, they can change in size but should last as long as the other fat cells in the area.

What Results Will I See From a Fat Transfer?

You will see fullness and volume enhancement in areas such as the cheeks, around the mouth, under eye areas, and the nasolabial folds from the nose to mouth. A fat transfer can make these areas look younger, firmer, and smoother.

The fat cells that graft in the area will stay there. However, your face may continue to lose some volume with age, so that results will change over time. A fat transfer allows you to maintain years or decades of enhanced fullness instead of the year a dermal filler may last.

What are the Benefits of a Fat Transfer?

Fat transfer has a number of benefits over other face-plumping methods such as dermal fillers.

No Negative Reactions

Because a fat transfer uses only healthy fat cells from your own body, it causes no risk of a reaction. Your body recognizes your own fat no matter where it moves to.

Long-Lasting Results

Unlike a year or so for most dermal fillers, a fat transfer can last for many years. This can save you a considerable amount over dermal fillers in the long term

Natural-Looking Volume

Volume from a fat transfer looks soft and completely natural. Transferred fat evenly fills the target area for smoother, fuller skin. The transferred cells have the same flexibility and firmness as your facial fat.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Fat Transfer?

Most people make good candidates for a fat transfer. Your body will not react to injections of your own fat, making this procedure very safe. To have a fat transfer, you will need to have enough body fat for liposuction.
