How Long Does a Blepharoplasty Last?

Loose eyelid skin and undereye bags often reach a point where your skin care routine no longer helps. You can see brighter, younger-looking eyes with an eyelid lift or blepharoplasty. This procedure is performed on the upper or lower lids to tighten and rejuvenate the eye area. A short recovery period and long-lasting results make blepharoplasty an increasingly popular procedure.

What is Blepharoplasty or an Eyelid Lift?

Blepharoplasty rejuvenates the upper or lower eyelids to restore a more youthful appearance. It uses well-concealed incisions to tighten loose skin and remove or reposition fat pads. The procedure can correct significant signs of aging around the eye area. If you feel like drooping lids make you look tired, an eyelid lift can help you look awake and alert again.

How Long Does a Blepharoplasty Last?

Blepharoplasty dramatically erases signs of aging, but it cannot stop the aging process. Changes to the skin and muscles around your eyes will continue. However, you will continue to look younger than you would have without the eyelid lift.

Most people are satisfied with their results for at least ten to fifteen years. Some people may never want another procedure, while others may choose to have the area touched up in the future.

How Does Blepharoplasty Work?

An eyelid lift is a minor surgical procedure that corrects drooping skin, wrinkles, and sagging fat pads to restore a more youthful appearance. You may need an upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty, or both. The procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia at Specialty Aesthetic Surgery.

Upper Blepharoplasty

An upper eyelid lift uses an incision hidden in a crease of the eyelid skin. Your surgeon will tighten loose skin and remove or reposition sagging pads of fat. The surgery can take less than an hour. The incision is closed with absorbable sutures and will heal into an almost invisible scar.

An upper blepharoplasty can remove skin and fat that droop so fat they have started to block your vision. In this case, blepharoplasty may be considered necessary and covered by insurance.

Lower Blepharoplasty

A lower eyelid lift uses an incision inside the eyelid or hidden under the lower eyelashes. Your surgeon will tighten the skin and manipulate the fat pads. This erases hollowness, puffiness, and undereye bags for a more youthful, less tired appearance.

How Much Does Blepharoplasty Cost?

The cost of blepharoplasty varies depending on your location, your surgeon, and the type of procedure performed. The average blepharoplasty costs about $4,120. This usually does not include your anesthesia, lab tests, and other expenses. We recommend scheduling a consultation to get a more accurate estimate and learn about our recommended procedures.

What are the Benefits of Blepharoplasty?

People who have blepharoplasty often find it has even more benefits than expected. Some of these include:

  • The eye area looks younger and rejuvenated
  • The undereye area looks smoother and less puffy
  • Eyes may feel less tired due to the removal of excess weight
  • Unnoticeable scars
  • Quick recovery time
  • Possible improved vision
  • Results lasting a decade or longer

The many benefits of eyelid lifts have made them one of the most popular aesthetic surgery procedures. They have a powerful rejuvenating effect on the eye area and can be combined with other procedures or non-surgical treatments.

What is Recovery Like After an Eyelid Lift?

You will usually have some swelling and possibly minor bruising around the eyes after surgery. Your surgeon may recommend using ice packs or cold compresses to keep swelling under control. Sleeping with your head elevated for the first few nights will also decrease swelling. You should look back to normal within a week or two. Full results become visible after a few months as any residual swelling fades away.

Which Procedures Can I Have With a Blepharoplasty?

Most people who see the effects of aging in the eye area have also noticed it in other places. Some people want to combine their youthful-looking eye area with a lifted brow or other rejuvenating treatment.

Eyelid lifts are often paired with brow lifts, facelifts, and other procedures. If you have concerns with areas besides the eyelids, discuss them with your surgeon when planning your treatment.

You also have non-surgical options that can be combined with blepharoplasty for anti-aging results. These include laser treatments, dermal fillers, and wrinkle relaxers like Botox®. Your treatment plan will include available resources to ensure you achieve the bright-eyed, youthful results you want.

Am I a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Good candidates for blepharoplasty want to restore and improve the appearance of the upper or lower eyelids. Many people can undergo an upper and lower lift simultaneously. Ideal candidates are in good health and have no medical conditions that would affect their healing.
