How Long Does It Take to Recover from a Tummy Tuck?

Many factors can lead to you no longer having the flat, toned abdomen you used to have. Gaining weight, becoming pregnant, or even just getting older can lead to loose skin, pockets of resistant fat, and unsightly stretch marks. A tummy tuck effectively restores your abdomen to its tighter, flatter appearance, letting you fit better into your clothes and feel more confident about your figure.

What is a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)?

Abdominoplasty is the formal name for a tummy tuck. Because each person has different concerns in this area, each tummy tuck is a unique procedure performed by our body surgery specialist, Dr. Michael Stein. This procedure addresses concerns like sagging skin, stretch marks, accumulated fat, and stretched or separated abdominal muscles. The goal of a tummy tuck is to highlight your flat stomach and attractive contours so you can feel more confident.

How Does a Tummy Tuck Work?

Abdominoplasty takes place under general anesthesia. Dr. Stein makes an incision across the lower part of the abdomen and uses it to lift and tighten the skin, removing excess skin and fat as needed. He will also use this incision to repair your abdominal muscles if they have separated, restoring a tighter, stronger core.

The length of the incision varies depending on the amount of loose skin, and liposuction may be used to sculpt and shape the area. After the procedure, you will rest comfortably under observation before being released to heal at home. You should plan to have transportation after your tummy tuck, and we recommend having someone stay with you for the first 24 hours.

How Long Does It Take to Recovery From a Tummy Tuck?

Your surgeon and surgical team will provide you with detailed instructions and following them will help you heal quickly and without complications. You can expect swelling and soreness in the abdominoplasty area, and the skin and repaired muscles may feel tight. You will receive pain medication for the first few days to keep you comfortable.

After your surgery, you may have drains in place to remove fluids. Your surgeon will remove these, as well as your sutures, at a follow-up appointment. A compression garment will support and protect the area while helping it achieve its sculpted shape. Most people find that the swelling and discomfort improve significantly within the first week

After your tummy tuck, you will be limited from lifting any amount of weight, so you may need assistance with childcare or other household tasks. Most people return to work within two to four weeks, depending on their energy levels, how much they have healed, and how much activity their job requires. You can typically resume your exercise routine and other activities after about six weeks. You can expect some residual swelling to last for several months.

How Long Do Tummy Tuck Results Last?

Your abdominoplasty results will evolve and improve for several months after surgery as swelling resolves and the tissues settle into their new position. Once established, tummy tuck results can be very long-lasting. Your lifestyle is the most important factor in how long your abdomen stays looking firm and flat. The best ways to keep your results for a lifetime include:

  • Lead a healthy lifestyle and maintain a consistent weight
  • Wait to have a tummy tuck until you have no more plans to become pregnant
  • Maintain good muscle tone in the area to keep it looking tight and firm

By maintaining a stable weight, you can enjoy your tummy tuck results for a lifetime. While skin all over the body becomes a bit more lax with age, your abdomen should continue to look flat and sculpted.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

Determining whether abdominoplasty is the best solution for your concerns requires a consultation and full examination. We may recommend a tummy tuck if:

  • You want to tighten sagging abdominal skin and remove stretch marks
  • You have loose or separated abdominal muscles
  • You have accumulations of fat around your abdominal area
  • You are a healthy adult who does not smoke
  • You have realistic expectations

Candidates who have lost weight and now want a tummy tuck should be maintaining a stable weight over time so their results will last. Women should be aware that becoming pregnant after having an abdominoplasty will significantly affect their results.

Individuals having a tummy tuck may also have experienced changes to their breasts or other areas of the body as a result of pregnancy or weight loss. Your surgeon can use liposuction, breast augmentation, breast lift, or radiofrequency skin tightening to help you achieve your shapely figure.
