How Does Ear Surgery Work?

Ear surgery (otoplasty) is a custom procedure that’s unique to the patient’s specific needs and goals. Your surgeon will assess your concerns and speak with you about the results you’d like to achieve. Otoplasty can be as subtle or dramatic as you want. The procedure may involve surgery on one or both ears for an optimal outcome.

Otoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia, however, in select cases can be done under local anesthesia. Otoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis with 3-7 days of downtime.

When Will I See Results?

Most patients see some immediate results from (otoplasty). However, you may experience some post-operative swelling and bruising that can mask the final outcome of your procedure. You can expect an optimal outcome in several weeks to several months as your new ears ‘settle’ into their final position. Otoplasty produces long-term results.

The majority of patients can get the results they want with a single procedure. In some instances, your surgeon may suggest multiple surgeries to correct severe concerns. Many parents opt to have their child’s ears reshaped after they’ve fully developed (around 6 years of age) to prevent unwanted bullying and improve a child’s overall self-image.

Is Otoplasty Right for Me?

Patients that are self-conscious about the shape or size of their ears can benefit from otoplasty procedure. Before considering the procedure, you should be in otherwise good physical health and have realistic expectations about what otoplasty can do for you. Non-smokers tend to have better results from surgical procedures of all types. Your surgeon will help determine your candidacy for the procedure at the time of your in-person consultation.
