Upper Vs. Lower Eyelid Lift: What’s the Difference?

If you’re like many men and women, you may be considering surgical eye rejuvenation. You’re aware that your eyes are making you appear tired, angry, and older than you actually are. While there are many non-surgical methods that boast promising results, an eyelid lift (or blepharoplasty) is the only real way to achieve long-lasting improvement.

Upper and lower eyelid lift procedures address entirely different concerns. The problem? Deciding which procedure is right for you. To do that, we’ll need to differentiate the two types so you can get a better idea of what each can and cannot accomplish.

What are My Options?

At Specialty Aesthetic Surgery, our skilled, board-certified surgeons routinely perform blepharoplasty procedures of all types. Depending on your ultimate goals, you may be better suited for one or both eyelid lift procedures. We’ll take a closer look at each to help give you an idea of which procedure may or may not be right for you.

Upper Eyelid Lift

An upper eyelid lift is the most commonly performed type of blepharoplasty. During this procedure, your surgeon will meticulously work to thin unwanted fat pads, tighten underlying muscles, and remove excess skin. An upper blepharoplasty can be done in approximately an hour under IV sedation and a local anesthetic.

Although an upper eyelid lift is primarily done for aesthetic reasons, the procedure can also address a few medical concerns. Not only do severely drooping upper lids significantly age you, but they can also impede your field of vision. Activities like driving, reading for prolonged periods may be impaired for patients with excessively sagging eyelids.

Lower Eyelid Lift

Men and women that are bothered by drooping skin, bags and deep or dark under-eye hollows may benefit best from a lower eyelid lift. The procedure also works to address puffy bags caused by age-related changes. Through small, easily-concealable incisions, your surgeon is able to either remove or reposition fat pads below the eyes and trim any excess skin that may be present.

Total Eye Rejuvenation

Combining upper and lower eyelid lifts is very common. Total upper and lower eye rejuvenation requires the same amount of downtime when combined as they do on their own. Having the two procedures at once allows patients to achieve more dramatic results with a single recovery period.

Eyelid surgery is generally long-lasting with the majority of patients only needing one procedure in a lifetime. If you’re ready to restore more youthful eyes that make you appear younger, happier, and well-rested, it might be time to consider blepharoplasty procedures at Specialty Aesthetic Surgery.
