Are you unhappy with the way your ears look?
Maybe you’re bothered by how they stick out from your head. Or maybe your child feels self-conscious about the appearance of his or her ears, to the point where it’s becoming a problem in school?
Whatever the case, there’s a solution that can help change the shape of misshapen or too-large ears on both adults and children: otoplasty surgery.
Let’s learn more about this cosmetic procedure, including what otoplasty is and how to tell if you’re a good candidate for this popular treatment.
What is Otoplasty Surgery?
Otoplasty surgery is a corrective cosmetic procedure that focuses on changing the appearance of the ears, including:
- The size
- The shape
- The position
- And more
Otoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia (younger patients and those who prefer to be asleep). During the procedure, your plastic surgeon reshapes and potentially removes some of the ear’s cartilage to create a shape that better matches your facial features.
Signs You May Need Otoplasty Surgery
- You’re unhappy with how your ears look, or they cause you embarrassment
- You feel as though your ears are too large for your head
- Your ears stick out from your head
- Your ears are misshapen or have become misshapen as a result of injury (ex: cauliflower ears)
All otoplasty candidates should be healthy individuals who are committed to following their recovery plan.
Otoplasty Recovery & Results
The majority of your otoplasty recovery will take place in the first week after your surgery; for this reason, you should expect to take at least one week off from work (or school, if it’s your child). You will also be expected to wear a protective compression garment to help your ears maintain their new shape.
You will need to avoid swimming in the weeks after your otoplasty procedure. Showering is allowed after 48 hours.
Otoplasty results are permanent. This cosmetic surgery can be performed on adults and children (with the latter being the more common type of patient).
