What Skin Concerns Is Microneedling Good For?

Regardless of your age, you most likely have concerns about the appearance of your skin. While some of us struggle with fine lines, wrinkles, and skin laxity, others seek to get rid of acne scars, hyperpigmentation, or other issues. Microneedling is a powerful skin rejuvenation treatment that helps you achieve smoother, firmer skin with a healthy glow at any age and for any skin type.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a non-surgical way to firm, tighten, and improve the appearance of your skin. At Specialty Aesthetic Surgery, we offer advanced Morpheus RF microneedling to optimize your results. During microneedling, tiny needles create channels a few millimeters into your skin, targeting the deeper layers where new cells develop and collagen is produced. These channels trigger your skin’s healing process, helping your skin look more youthful and refreshed.

How Does Microneedling Work?

During your microneedling treatment, the needles enter the skin, creating tiny areas of controlled damage. At the same time, the needles emit radiofrequency energy that heats the deep layers of your skin. These effects trigger cells in your dermis called fibroblasts to begin producing more collagen, increasing your skin’s firmness and resilience. At the same time, the healing process repairs the microdamage with fresh, healthy skin cells, replacing older, damaged ones. As a result, your skin looks smoother and more even.

What Skin Concerns Is Microneedling Good For?

One reason for the popularity of microneedling is its versatility. It can improve a wide range of skin concerns for almost all skin types and can be customized to your needs. We may recommend microneedling for skin rejuvenation if you want to treat:

Signs of Aging

Microneedling has been referred to as “collagen induction therapy” due to its ability to replace collagen lost due to aging. This new collagen enhances your skin’s structure and support, leading to improvements in:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Skin laxity
  • Age spots
  • Dullness

Many people use microneedling as their secret to smooth, healthy-looking skin that seems to defy aging. Keeping collagen production at high levels keeps your skin looking more youthful.

Textural Issues

New collagen formation combined with fresh new skin cells leads to a smoother, more even surface. Microneedling can address many different skin texture issues, including:

  • Enlarged pores
  • Acne scars
  • Rough texture
  • Stretch marks

A series of microneedling treatments can transform rough, uneven skin, giving you a smooth canvas for makeup and a boost of confidence.

Pigmentation Concerns

Many factors can cause your skin to overproduce melanin, the pigment that creates hyperpigmentation. Pigmentation issues treated with microneedling include:

  • Melasma
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from acne
  • Sun damage
  • Age spots

Instead of trying to hide dark spots, microneedling lets you show off clear, rejuvenated skin. You only have to tell people how you achieved it if you want to!

How Many Microneedling Treatments Will I Need?

While you may see improvements after one microneedling session, most people will need a series of treatments to see their best results. The average schedule is three sessions, each spaced a few weeks apart. Deeper textural issues or other concerns may require additional sessions. We will discuss the number of treatments you can expect during your consultation.

After microneedling, you may notice brighter, healthier skin within a few weeks, but you will continue to develop more collagen for three to four months, improving your results. Results can last a year or more, and we recommend annual maintenance sessions to keep your skin smooth and healthy. Results will vary so that you may need touch-ups more or less often depending on your skin’s collagen production.

How Much Downtime Will I Have After Microneedling?

When you leave your microneedling session, your skin will usually look red and feel sensitive or swollen. While there is no downtime required, people often take a day or two away from social obligations to let the redness fade. Most people return to work and other activities within a day or two.

During healing, avoid potentially irritating treatments like scrubs, peels, or retinol. Use sunscreen and avoid sun exposure to help your skin heal and prevent UV light from damaging your newly formed collagen. We can recommend non-irritating skincare products to use while your skin is still sensitive.

Am I a Good Candidate for Microneedling?

While many lasers are only safe for lighter skin tones, microneedling works safely on any skin type or tone. Good candidates are healthy adults with realistic expectations who want to improve a range of skin concerns. There is no “best age” to have this treatment, and men and women of any age can see significant benefits. You should not have microneedling if you have irritated or damaged skin or a skin infection. You may not be a good candidate if you have certain medical conditions or tend to form abnormal scars.
