Ptosis refers to a drooping eyelid, caused by a congenital condition, age-related changes, or other muscle-weakening processes. Ptosis can affect both the functional and aesthetic aspects of one or both eyes, by impairing vision and causing an asymmetrical appearance of the eyelids.

Drooping, partly closed upper eyelids that cause overall dissatisfaction with appearance and also can cause functional visual impairment

Ptosis repairs are categorized into three groups- external, internal approaches and sling procedures for severe ptosis. This surgery is often combined with cosmetic adjuncts such as blepharoplasty to enhance the overall appearance. Incisions are placed to camouflage the appearance and are hardly noticeable after healing. Ptosis repairs generally are performed under local anesthesia with sedation and take about an hour to perform.

An extensive consultation and examination will determine the choice of procedures and other adjunctive techniques that will enhance the cosmetic results and the patient’s goals. Ideally old photographs are utilized to see the youthful contours of the patient.

Patients are given detailed instructions on postoperative care for their incisions which typically involves ointments placed on the wounds and the use of iced compresses to reduce swelling and expedite the healing process.
