Facial Implants Vs. Facial Fat Grafting: What’s the Difference?

A common complaint among many aging men and women that walk through our door is volume loss. Whether it’s in the form of unwanted wrinkles, sunken cheeks, thinning lips, or under-eye hollows, there are solutions. Age-related volume loss is something that can be addressed using a variety of mathods.

At Specialty Aesthetic Surgery, we offer several options for men and women that would like to restore more youthful facial contours. Depending on the severity of your condition and the goals you’d like to achieve, you might be better suited for either facial implants or fat grafting. Let’s take a closer look.

Facial Implants

Facial implants consist of medical-grade silicone and are placed below the surface of the skin to add instant volume. Patients can see results that are as subtle or as dramatic as they like thanks to a variety of custom shapes and sizes. Facial implants can significantly change the structure of the cheeks and/or jawbone.

Results from facial implants can be seen immediately with gradual improvement as any post-operative swelling subsides. Facial implants are considered a permanent procedure with lifelong results. Downtime is minimal, and most patients are able to return to normal activities in about 5-7 days.

Facial Fat Grafting

Facial fat grafting relocates your own fat from one area of the body (typically the stomach or thighs) to another (face and neck) to improve facial contours. Once fat is harvested, it is injected at precise depths to achieve desired volume enhancement. In experienced hands, fat grafting produces natural-looking results that most patients love.

You’ll be able to see immediate improvement from facial fat grafting. Although it is normal for some of the placed fat to be reabsorbed by the body, the procedure is long-lasting for most. You can expect anywhere from 7-10 days of downtime with this procedure.

What’s Right for You?

Ultimately, that’s a decision only you can make. The best way to determine which procedure is right for you is to schedule an in-person consultation with a skilled specialist. The board-certified surgeons at Specialty Aesthetic Surgery can discuss all of your options in-depth at the time of your consultation. Together, you can create a customized treatment plan to reach your aesthetic goals.
