How Long is Recovery from an Otoplasty?

Are you unhappy with the way that your ears look? Otoplasty can improve the profile and shape of the ear, leading to a more satisfactory appearance.

What Can Otoplasty Treat?

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that corrects or adjusts the shape of the ears. Typically, it involves correcting the size, shape, or appearance of the ears to make them more symmetrical and correct them from sticking out. Many people opt for otoplasties for cosmetic reasons.

What To Expect After Otoplasty

  • Time off work. We advise that you take at least five to seven days off work
  • Additional recovery time. While the most critical healing occurs in the first week after ear surgery, full recovery can often take several additional weeks. However, during this time you will be able to function normally and may go back to work.

Following surgery, we will prescribe pain medication that you should take for the first 24 to 72 hours after your treatment. If you continue to experience pain after this, you can take over-the-counter painkillers.

Several factors can affect how long it takes you to recover from an otoplasty.

Smoking, for instance, reduces the efficiency of the cardiovascular system, making it more difficult to transport nutrients to the cells in your ear. Smokers, therefore, typically require more extended recovery periods than those who have never smoked.

Because otoplasty is a surgical procedure that changes the shape of the tissue that comprises your ear, results are immediately apparent.

For the first few days after treatment, you will need to wear a bandage around your head to protect your ears and prevent inadvertent injury. After about a week, a protective bandage (such as a headband) is recommended at night.

Where possible, you should avoid wearing collars or clothing that could rub against your ears, since this will interfere with the healing process. After your bandages come off, we may recommend that you wear a protective headband for a further three weeks.
