What is the Difference Between a Neck Lift & Neck Liposuction?

Over time, the skin of the neck loses elasticity, making us look older. Regardless of age, a double chin can add years to our faces. In addition, the thin skin of the neck can sag leading to a “turkey neck” appearance. Achieving a more graceful neckline and a better contoured jawline through cosmetic surgery is a very effective way to help make us look as young as we feel.

What Are My Neck Contouring Options?

A jawline with full or loose skin is one aspect of the face that can easily make people look older than they are. Poor neck contours can significantly affect facial appearance, and Specialty Aesthetic Surgery has several options that can improve facial contours and address loose, sagging skin around the jawline. A neck lift or neck liposuction – either alone or in combination with other procedures – can easily improve your look with minimal downtime. Let’s take a look.

Neck Lift

Neck lifts are used to address a sagging neck area and smooth and tighten the skin under the chin. A neck lift will typically be an outpatient procedure and will require either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Incisions will be made behind the ear or under the chin, and through those, your cosmetic surgeon will tighten muscles or tissues of the neck area.

After this, excess skin will be removed to improve the contour of the jawline, producing a more youthful appearance. This procedure can be used to address issues such as neck banding, “turkey neck”, and jowling to create a smooth, firmer, younger-looking neckline.

Neck Liposuction

Some people experience a full or double chin that doesn’t respond to diet or exercise. In cases where excess skin isn’t a problem, removal of this fatty tissue under the skin can be achieved through a procedure known as neck liposuction. Usually only requiring local anesthetic and one to two small incisions under the chin or behind the ears, a surgeon inserts tiny cannulas through the incisions to remove subcutaneous fat and sculpt a more graceful jawline. Because there is no removal of skin, the best patients for this are generally in their 20’s to 40’s and have good skin tone.

Combination Procedures

In some cases, the best way to achieve optimal results is a combination of procedures. Many patients choose to combine neck procedures with others, commonly including facelift, rhinoplasty, or chin augmentation, as a way to achieve the best aesthetic results with a single recovery period. Oftentimes, facial appearance can be refined in more than one area for the patient’s ideal result – and with a combination procedure, there is less cumulative downtime and maximum benefit.
