What is an Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)?

Brachioplasty, commonly called an arm lift, removes excess skin and fat from the upper arms. This procedure can create firmer, more sculpted arms without “bat wings.” Arm lift surgery is popular for patients with loose, sagging skin on their upper arms after significant weight loss. Dr. Stein can combine brachioplasty with liposuction for those with stubborn arm fat to achieve that slim, toned look.

Ideal candidates for an arm lift are overall healthy and at a stable weight. It is often beneficial for those who have lost significant weight or have skin laxity in the upper arms due to age or genetics. If the patient has stubborn fat in the arms that haven’t responded to weight loss efforts, liposuction may be included in the procedure to remove excess fat. Dr. Stein will assess your arms and discuss your goals during a consultation to help determine your candidacy.

An arm lift is an outpatient procedure that typically takes one to three hours under general anesthesia. Dr. Stein will make an incision on the inside of your arm from the armpit to the elbow. Through this incision, he will remove excess skin and fatty tissue to sculpt the arms.

After an arm lift, patients can expect some discomfort, swelling, and bruising. We will prescribe pain medication if needed, and your arms will be bandaged for a couple of days. You may need to wear compression garments for up to four weeks. Patients may need a follow-up appointment to have drainage tubes or sutures removed.

Most patients must take approximately two weeks off work or longer for physically demanding jobs. You cannot lift your arms above shoulder level for at least two weeks, and it may be a month or more before you can resume exercise. We’ll provide more detailed recovery instructions before your appointment, and you can always contact us with questions.

Patients will have reduced excess skin and fat immediately after brachioplasty, but swelling can make it difficult to see the effects of the surgery at first. You can expect to see improvements gradually as the swelling subsides over the next several weeks. Soon, you’ll enjoy slimmer, more toned arms with reduced sagging. Brachioplasty can resolve “flabby” arms or the “bat wings” appearance.

Since the skin and fat are permanently tightened and removed, the results of an arm lift are long-lasting. You should enjoy your brachioplasty benefits for a decade or more if you maintain a stable weight. However, remember that skin naturally loses elasticity and droops with age, which can eventually lead to further sagging in the upper arms.

Our expert surgeons would love to meet with you for an in-person consultation. Take the first step to getting your questions answered and to find out if an Arm Lift is the right solution for you.
