What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is the ultimate body contouring procedure. For patients with areas of stubborn fat that haven’t responded to diet and exercise, liposuction can help them finally achieve the slim, sculpted figure they’ve worked so hard for. At Specialty Aesthetic Surgery, Dr. Stein offers liposuction for the abdomen, thighs, arms, and more.

Good candidates for liposuction are at or near their ideal weight but have localized fat deposits they want to reduce. Liposuction is not a replacement for weight loss but can target specific areas of stubborn fat for patients who are overall healthy.

You should have good skin elasticity and be committed to maintaining a stable weight for optimal results. For patients with skin laxity, we may recommend a complementary procedure like radiofrequency skin tightening to enhance your results. Dr. Stein can help you determine if liposuction is suitable for you during your consultation.

Liposuction procedures are performed with local or general anesthesia so you will not feel any pain. Depending on the treatment area and how much fat is removed, the surgery can take one to five hours. Liposuction may sometimes be performed simultaneously with another procedure, such as abdominoplasty

Dr. Stein will make a small incision to insert a cannula, which he will use to break apart the targeted fat and suction it out. He will then stitch the incision closed.

You can go home the same day after a liposuction procedure. Most patients take one to two weeks off work, depending on the extent of their surgery. There will be some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the treatment area during this time, and we’ll prescribe pain medication if needed.

We will give you detailed aftercare instructions before their procedure and may instruct you to wear a compression garment for a few weeks. Patients can typically resume all activities, including exercise, in four to six weeks. Our staff will be available to answer any questions you have during recovery.

Swelling and bruising after liposuction may initially obscure the results. Patients generally see improvements within two months as the swelling subsides, with optimal results in approximately three to six months. At this time, you should see reduced fat in the target area for a slimmer, more contoured figure.

Since the fat is permanently removed, the results of liposuction are long-lasting. However, weight gain can cause the remaining fat cells in the treatment area to expand, so a healthy lifestyle and weight management are essential for lifelong results.

Our expert surgeons would love to meet with you for an in-person consultation. Take the first step to getting your questions answered and to find out if Liposuction is the right solution for you.
