What is Labiaplasty?

For some women, overly large or long labia can be a source of emotional and physical discomfort. Dr. Stein offers labiaplasty at Specialty Aesthetic Surgery to help you feel comfortable and confident with your intimate area.

Labiaplasty is a procedure that improves the size and appearance of the labia. This may be done on the labia majora, which are the outer lips, or the labia minora, which are the smaller inner lips. Many women are bothered by loose, excess labial tissue from aging, pregnancy, weight loss, or genetics.

Labiaplasty is most often performed when the labia are too long. Excess labial tissue can get tugged and pinched during activities like biking, jogging, or physical intercourse, causing discomfort and irritation. Excess tissue in the area can also make hygiene difficult and increase the risk of infections and UTIs.

Women may also seek labiaplasty for cosmetic reasons, such as asymmetry of the labia or an undesirable shape. During a detailed consultation, Dr. Stein can help you determine if labiaplasty is right for you.

Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure performed with local or general anesthesia, and it typically takes less than two hours. The surgery most often involves removing the excess tissue from the labia to achieve the desired size and shape, and it can be performed on the labia majora, labia minora, or both. Alternatively, Dr. Stein may use fat grafting from liposuction to add volume to the labia.

Some swelling, discomfort, and soreness in the treatment area are normal. We’ll give you aftercare instructions for managing any pain, using ice packs, and keeping the area clean. Most patients return to work approximately one week after labiaplasty. You may need to wait a month or more before resuming strenuous exercise and sexual activity. It may take a few months for all swelling to subside and full sensation to return to the area.

The initial swelling and bruising can obscure the effects of labiaplasty. You’ll see improvement in a few weeks and final results in three to six months. After labiaplasty, patients may feel more confident wearing certain types of clothing, being sexually intimate, and engaging in physical activities like swimming or cycling.

Labiaplasty results typically last a lifetime. For best results, patients should wait to have labiaplasty until they are finished having children. Childbirth can undo the results of the procedure.
