WHAT IS OTOPLASTY?

Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery, corrects the shape and appearance of your ear. Our experts in facial plastic surgery are highly experienced in methods for creating a natural looking ear that is visually appealing. We understand that large, wide ears can be a source of embarrassment, and being secure in your own appearance is important. If you feel that your ears don’t fit with the rest of your appearance, Otoplasty may be the answer.

Misshaped ears can be an embarrassing facial feature for anyone regardless of age or gender, including young children. During your individual consultation, we can discuss you or your child’s need for surgery to correct protruding or misshapen ears.

An Otoplasty procedure is fairly simple. Patients will be sedated with anesthesia to prevent them from feeling any pain during the surgery. An incision will be made behind the ear(s) where cartilage is altered to form the desired shape. Risks include: infection, scarring, and skin discoloration/swelling.

These can be discussed further at your consultation to assess your individual likelihood of risks.

Patients can expect to go home the day of the surgery. While you will be up and moving within 24 hours, expect to take up to 5-7 days off from work as you heal. Before the surgery, patients will be given detailed instructions on how to care for their ears in the days following the surgery. Care includes ice compresses and special creams to minimizing swelling and bruising.

We also prescribe pain medication to be taken during the first 24-72 hours following the surgery. After this time period, over the counter Tylenol can be taken as needed.

Most patients are pleased to find that there are notable differences right away. While Otoplasty results can be visible almost immediately following the surgery, temporary swelling will prevent you from seeing the full effect of the results.
