How is a Lower Blepharoplasty Performed?

Age and heredity can cause the lower eyelids to sag and pads of fat to accumulate under the eyes. A lower blepharoplasty or eyelid lift can lift the lower eyelid, remove this excess fat, and restore the appearance of the eye area.

What is a Lower Blepharoplasty?

A lower blepharoplasty rejuvenates the eye area by lifting loose skin off the lower eyelids and removing fat pads that make the under eye area look puffy.

You will be under general anesthesia during the procedure so that you will feel no discomfort. Some people choose to have an upper blepharoplasty at the same time as a lower one, but some people only need a lower blepharoplasty to correct their concerns.

What Are The Types of Lower Blepharoplasty?

Surgeons have many ways of performing blepharoplasty. Two of these methods include the skin flap technique and the transconjunctival technique

Skin Flap

During the skin flap method, the surgeon will access the fat pads and under eye structures by opening a small flap of skin. The scars from the incisions will be hidden in the creases of the eyelid. This approach is used for patients with advanced changes requiring additional support to the eyelid.

Transconjunctival

In the transconjunctival method, the surgeon makes an incision inside the lower eyelid, leaving no marks on the skin. Through this incision, they can lift up the eyelid skin and remove the pads of fat that give the undereye appearance of a puffy, tired look.

What is Recovery Like After Lower Blepharoplasty?

Recovery from the skin flap method of blepharoplasty depends on the size of the flap. You will have external incisions that can be visible until they heal. A transconjunctival procedure leaves no external markings and requires less healing time. In general, at Specialty Aesthetic Surgery, we recommend taking five to seven days off from work and responsibilities in order to give yourself time to heal. You can usually resume regular exercise after about two to three weeks.

What Results Will I See From a Lower Blepharoplasty?

You will see a disappearance of your sagging lower eyelid and will have an undereye area that looks awake and alert. Bulging and puffiness in the undereye area is going to disappear as a result of removing underlying pads of accumulated fat.

Am I a Good Candidate for Lower Blepharoplasty?

If you have sagging skin, bags under your eyes, or undereye puffiness, you may be a good candidate for a lower blepharoplasty. One of our surgeons will evaluate you to determine whether this surgery will help you accomplish your goals. They will also discuss which surgical methods will work best for you.
