Upper VS Lower Blepharoplasty: Top 3 Differences

A blepharoplasty, or eye lift, can correct people’s concerns about the area around their eyes. While your surgeon can perform both in one surgery, an upper and lower blepharoplasty have three significant differences.

What is a Blepharoplasty?

A surgeon performs blepharoplasty on the upper or lower eyelids, or sometimes both. These procedures improve the appearance of the eye area by removing drooping eyelids, removing excess skin, and fat and removing the appearance of undereye bags and dark circles.

Upper VS Lower Blepharoplasty: Top 3 Differences

1. Upper Eyelids

This form of blepharoplasty treats the upper eyelid, where the surgeon removes excess skin and fat, then lifts the area to get rid of sagging and overhanging skin. This can significantly brighten the eyes and make you appear more alert and engaged.

2. Lower Eyelids

While this form of blepharoplasty cannot treat issues with a sagging upper eyelid, it works to remove the fat, skin, and excess tissue that makes up bulges and dark circles under the eye, leaving the area brighter, firmer, and more alert.

3. Total Eye Rejuvenation

Do you have concerns in both of these areas? Many people do. For this reason, we offer the total eye rejuvenation procedure, which combines an upper and lower blepharoplasty into the same surgery. Your entire eye area will look brighter and younger.

What is Recovery from Blepharoplasty Like?

You will have some discomfort and swelling for the first few days, but using ice packs as directed can help alleviate this. Depending on your surgeon’s instructions, you should not engage in any strenuous activities for a week to two weeks. You should plan to wear glasses instead of contact lenses for at least two weeks and apply any medications the doctor prescribes for you.

Am I a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

People with symptoms such as sagging eyelids, loose skin around the eyes, or dark undereye circles may be good candidates for blepharoplasty. The ideal candidate does not smoke and has reasonable expectations about what surgery can and cannot accomplish.

What Results Will I See From Blepharoplasty?

In the upper eyelid area, you will see a lifted eyelid with no drooping, and overhanging skin, making you look tired or irritable. You look more alert and awake, and your eyes look more visible and expressive.

In the lower eyelid area, you will see dark circles and under eye sagging diminished and the lower eyelid area firmer and more lifted. Removing sagging under eye bags can make the eyes look brighter and more youthful.
